Like the US, Canada has no embassy, consulate, or visa application centre in the Cayman Islands. If you need a Canadian visa, you will apply online through IRCC's website — but you must still travel to Kingston, Jamaica to provide your biometrics. Here is the full process.
The Good News: Most of It Is Online
Unlike US visa applications, which require an in-person interview, most Canadian visa applications are submitted entirely online through your IRCC account. You upload your documents, pay the fee, and submit — all from the Cayman Islands.
The catch: biometrics (fingerprints and photo) must be collected in person at a designated collection point. The nearest one to Cayman is VFS Global in Kingston, Jamaica.
Step-by-Step Process
1. Create an IRCC Account
Register at the IRCC website. You can use a GCKey or your bank sign-in (if you have a Canadian bank).
2. Complete Your Application Online
Fill out the application forms, upload supporting documents, and pay the fee:
- Visitor visa (TRV): CAD $100 application fee + $85 biometrics = $185 total
- Study permit: CAD $150 + $85 biometrics = $235
- Work permit: CAD $155 + $85 biometrics = $240
3. Receive Biometrics Instruction Letter
After submitting your online application, IRCC sends you a Biometrics Instruction Letter (BIL). You have 30 days from the date of this letter to provide your biometrics.
4. Travel to Kingston for Biometrics
Book an appointment at VFS Global Kingston (Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, 7th Floor, 81 Knutsford Boulevard, Kingston 5). The biometrics appointment itself is quick — typically 15-30 minutes. Unlike a US visa interview, there is no interrogation. They simply take your fingerprints and photo.
For trip planning details (flights, hotels, transport), see our Kingston trip guide.
5. Wait for Processing
Processing happens after biometrics. Typical times from the Caribbean:
- Visitor visa: 4-8 weeks
- Study permit: 7-12 weeks
- Work permit: Varies significantly
Your passport does NOT need to be submitted initially — IRCC processes the application first. If approved, they will request your passport for visa stamping (either mail it or submit at VFS).
Biometrics: What to Know
- Valid for 10 years: Once collected, your biometrics are valid for a decade. If you applied for a Canadian visa within the last 10 years and gave biometrics, you may not need to travel to Kingston again.
- No VFS in Cayman: Despite Cayman being a significant source of Canadian visa applications, there is no biometrics collection facility on-island.
- 30-day deadline: You must provide biometrics within 30 days of receiving the instruction letter. Plan your Kingston trip as soon as you submit your online application.
Special Cases
Study Permits
If you are applying for a Canadian study permit from Cayman, you need:
- Letter of acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
- Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) — unless you are in a master's or doctoral programme
- Proof of funds: approximately CAD $20,635 for living expenses (GIC recommended)
- Medical exam from an IRCC-approved panel physician
See our Cayman study permit service page for full details.
Work Permits
If you have a job offer from a Canadian employer, the work permit process involves your employer obtaining an LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) in most cases. The biometrics requirement is the same — Kingston trip required.
Do BOTC Passport Holders Need a Canadian Visa?
Yes. Cayman Islands (BOTC) passport holders require a visa to enter Canada. This is different from holders of a full British passport, who can enter Canada visa-free with an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization).
If you are Caymanian and have registered for full British citizenship, you can use your British passport + eTA to enter Canada without a visa — no biometrics, no Kingston trip, no fees beyond the $7 CAD eTA. See our guide to getting a British passport.
