Every Cayman Islands resident who needs a US or Canadian visa must make the trip to Kingston, Jamaica. For many, this is unfamiliar territory — different city, different currency, and the stress of a visa interview on top of it all. This guide covers everything you need to plan a smooth, efficient trip.
Flights: Cayman to Kingston
Cayman Airways operates direct flights from Owen Roberts International Airport (Grand Cayman) to Norman Manley International Airport (Kingston). Key details:
- Flight time: Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes
- Frequency: Typically 3-5 flights per week (not daily). Check the schedule carefully.
- Round-trip cost: $350-$600 USD depending on season and how far in advance you book
- Booking tip: Book as soon as your embassy appointment is confirmed. Prices rise closer to the date, and flights sell out.
Important: Confirm your appointment date before booking flights. If your appointment gets rescheduled, you want flexible tickets or travel insurance that covers changes.
Recommended Hotels Near the US Embassy
The US Embassy is at 142 Old Hope Road, Kingston 6, in the Liguanea area. Stay nearby to minimize morning travel stress:
- The Jamaica Pegasus Hotel — Knutsford Boulevard, New Kingston. 15-minute drive to the embassy. Business-class hotel, reliable, popular with visa applicants. $120-$180/night.
- The Courtleigh Hotel & Suites — Knutsford Boulevard. Similar distance. Good value. $100-$150/night.
- Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel — Waterloo Road. Closer to the embassy (10 minutes). Boutique feel. $130-$200/night.
- AC Hotel by Marriott Kingston — Lady Musgrave Road. Modern, well-located. $150-$220/night.
- Budget option: Airbnb in the Liguanea or Hope Road area. $60-$100/night. Ensure it has reviews and confirmed security.
Ground Transport
Kingston is not a walkable city for visitors. You will need transport at several points:
- Airport to hotel: Authorized taxis at the airport cost approximately $30-$40 USD to New Kingston/Liguanea area. Agree on the fare before getting in.
- Hotel to embassy: $10-$15 USD by taxi. Ask your hotel to arrange one. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your appointment.
- Embassy back to hotel: Taxis wait outside the embassy. Same fare.
- Hotel to airport (return): $30-$40 USD again.
- Total transport budget: $80-$120 for the entire trip.
Ride-hailing: InDrive and local ride-hailing apps work in Kingston and can be cheaper than street taxis.
Suggested 2-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive and Prepare
- Morning/Afternoon: Fly in from Grand Cayman. Check into hotel.
- Evening: Review your documents one final time. Lay out everything you need for the interview: passport, DS-160 confirmation, appointment letter, photographs, financial documents, proof of Cayman residency.
- Early to bed: Your interview is likely early morning.
Day 2: Interview Day
- 6:00-6:30 AM: Wake up. Light breakfast.
- 7:00 AM: Taxi to the embassy. Arrive 30 minutes early.
- 7:30-10:00 AM: Security check, biometrics, and interview. The interview itself takes 3-5 minutes, but the overall process (queue, security, waiting) can take 2-3 hours.
- Late morning: Done. If your passport is not retained, you can fly back the same day if there is an afternoon flight.
- If passport retained: You may need to stay an extra day or arrange courier return to Cayman.
Optional Day 3: If Needed
If your passport needs processing or there is no same-day return flight, spend an extra night. Use the time to explore Kingston — Devon House for ice cream, Hope Gardens, or the Bob Marley Museum are all near the embassy area.
What to Bring
- Passport (valid, with blank pages)
- DS-160 confirmation page (printed)
- Appointment confirmation letter (printed)
- One 2x2 passport photo
- Proof of Cayman Islands residency (work permit, residency certificate, utility bills)
- Bank statements (6 months)
- Employment letter from your Cayman employer
- Any supporting documents (property deeds, business registration, family evidence)
- Jamaican dollars or USD: Jamaica uses JMD, but USD is widely accepted in tourist areas. Bring both. ATMs are available at the airport and in New Kingston.
Safety Tips for Kingston
- Stay in established areas: New Kingston, Liguanea, and the Hope Road corridor are safe for visitors
- Use authorized transport: Hotel taxis or ride-hailing apps rather than flagging random vehicles
- Do not display expensive items unnecessarily
- Keep copies of your passport and documents (photos on your phone)
- Kingston is a normal city — exercise the same caution you would in any major city
Canadian Visa Appointments
If you are applying for a Canadian visa, the process is slightly different. Most Canadian visa applications are submitted online, but biometrics must be collected in person at VFS Global in Kingston. The VFS office is at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel (7th floor, Knutsford Boulevard). The same trip planning advice applies.
